WHAT ARE ROBOTS?

R2

ROBOTS and AUTOMATA, are a more elaborate type of self-controlled, smart tools , that is, artifacts we create to help us make things we need faster, cost-effective, safer, better - they are like our "mechanical, smart, brave servants" that are made to facilitate our dealings with the environment by imitating ours or other life-like behaviors. Through our history, we also have had many "less smart tools", starting with simple objects such as rocks and sticks, clubs and hammers, bows and arrows, wrenches, drills, pliers and presses, to animals and mechanisms powered by animals, wind or river water flows, steam and gasoline ignition pressure, electrical engines, machines that weave textiles, mill, grind blend and cook food, refrigerators, cash registers, vacuum cleaners, clothes washing machines, and transportation vehicles, to name a few. Can you think of others?

WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT ROBOTS

r5 r4 r6

We care about tools, ROBOTS and AUTOMATA because they can help us take good care of ourselves, making our lives easier, safer and richer by helping us produce more goods and services of quality for all of us, at lower costs, and at times by doing things that could not be safe or even possible for us to do with our own hands.

HOW DO ROBOTS WORK?

R3

ROBOTS are thus "smart tools" we can create to help us do what we want done and as necessary, imitate us or other life-like behaviors in how we do things: therefore they are made to feel, see, touch, hear, "think and decide" how to perceive, "imagine" and modify the environment as we want it done, to serve us best. Robots help us make things more efficient, aboundant, economic, safer, faster, smarter, stronger, and reliable .

But how do robots work ?
