Technology-Infused Lesson Plan  by  John Corker

Subject: Fractions

Course: 3rd Grade Mathematics

Objective: Students will be able to identify a fraction as being part of a whole.

Key Vocabulary: numerator, denominator

CA Content Standards: Number Sense 3.0 - Students understand the relationship between whole numbers, simple fractions, and decimals.

Materials: Windows PC with PowerPoint, LCD projector, Projection screen, Overhead projector,  Fraction manipulatives for overhead, Whiteboards for each student

Lesson:

Introduction
Ask students what sorts of things we can cut into parts. (Pizza, cake, pie, sandwiches, etc.) Tell them that today we are going to look at what happens in math when we cut things into equal parts.

Instruction
Present the PowerPoint slideshow “Getting A Taste Of Fractions! Stop appropriately at each step to explain what is going on and prompt students with questions. (Note: Ideally the actual PowerPoint used would provide additional examples beyond the slides provided for this assignment)

Guided Practice
Now display additional fractions using the overhead manipulatives. Have all the pieces of a whole together, then pull some of the pieces out. Have students write the fraction on their whiteboards. Ask students to explain why they got this answer. Repeat until they demonstrate mastery.

Independent Practice
Distribute a worksheet in which fractions are displayed as shaded parts of a whole. Go over the example problem so that students know what to do, then walk around to support and scaffold as necessary.

Closure
Review that a fraction is an equal part of a whole, and go over the terms numerator and denominator. Have students tell you what they learned.

Assessment

For homework students will be given a sheet in which they are given circles (or other shapes) divided into equal part. They will be given the fraction and then asked to shade in the appropriate amount of parts.
