Course Title: Music Theory 2nd grade - THIS DOCUMENT CAN USE SOME NICE IMAGES...
Topic:  The notes on a music staff
California Content Standards:    Music
1.2 Read, write, and perform simple patterns of pitch, using solfege.
Instructional Goal: Students will be able to name each of the seven notes on a music staff.

Lesson:
Introduction: “Remember how we learned last week that the different sounds in music are named after letters, except the musical alphabet only goes up to what letter? (A-G).  Today we’re going to learn where each of those notes belongs on a sheet of music.”
Instruction: (open up powerpoint presentation) Display each slide, also having a conversation about each slide.  Whether asking for opinions, or checking for knowledge by asking random students to answer questions. - NEEDS MORE DETAIL
Guided Practice: Students can come up in groups and see the teacher play each of the notes on a keyboard.  Each student can then have a try at it, while naming each note as they play it and hear it.  The groups that are not up front with the teacher will be working on their independent practice.
Independent Practice: Students are given a blank music staff and are instructed to use the seven notes they have just learned (as well as they letter names of each note) to create a song.  At a later date these compositions will be entered into Cakewalk, and each student will be able to hear their creation in midi format. - NEEDS MORE DETAIL
Evaluation:  Since students are required to write the letter name of each note above it, the accuracy of this assignment will be used to evaluate.
