TED5110  Technology Infused Sample Lesson Plan

 DATE:   March 3, 2007

COURSE TITLE:  Life Science  2nd Grade

Mr. Razo    Room 6

LESSONThe Cycles of Reproduction of a Butterfly

TOPIC:   CA Science Content Standards – Second Grade

INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL: Students should identify the repeating nature of life cycles of butterflies, and each of the four distinct stages of the life cycle of a butterfly undergoing metamorphosis:

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE:  Students should be able to recognize the cyclical nature of life in butterflies, and  identify 100% of the time, in the correct order, each of the four stages in the life cycle of a butterfly undergoing metamorphosis

RATIONALE :  Metamorphosis shows a clear example of the predictable stages in the life cycle of an insect.  Similar, although not as dramatic stages occur for all other plants and animals.

LESSON CONTENT:  The stages of the life cycle of a butterfly undergoing metamorphosis

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES

Focusing event (something to get the students' attention)

Show a dissecated - REAL butterfly sample
Miscellaneous butterfly related book samples
Mention the nature of life cycles and cycles:  BIRTH, GROWTH, REPRODUCTION, and DEATH --- repeating generations

Teaching procedures (methods you will use)

Show-and-tell PowerPoint slide presentation- “Butterfly Metamorphosis”, w/discussion at each step. A printed color copy of each of the pages of the presentation is displayed on the Math and Science bulletin board.

After slide presentation, students go to their desks, take a blank page of paper, crayons/colors, DRAW and LABEL in color, images of the four stages of metamorphosis of a butterfly.  Students can look at the printed copy of the images of the presentation, posted on a bulletin board.

Students finishing early can go to the computer and create an MS Paint drawing of a butterfly. They can PRINT and save their images at the end.

Students with idle time can cut and paste the butterfly images they drew, on other paper pages, adding their own images of open field scenarios

Formative check (progress checks throughout the lesson)

Insert Q&A during presentation of the sample dissecated butterfly, and the PowerPoint slide presentation

Student Participation (how you will get the students to participate)

Draw active discussion during presentation of the sample dissecated butterfly, and the PowerPoint slide presentation

Closure (how you will end the lesson)

Give a summary of the life cycle, and stages of development (metamorphosis) of a butterfly – Presentation SLIDE 1, and call attention to the life cycles of all living things

EVALUATION PROCEDURES (how you will measure outcomes to determine if the material has been learned)

MATERIALS AND AIDS (what you will need in order to teach this lesson)
